Background Story

In the course of the TORNADO MRCA developement (military name Panavia PA-200) 10 prototype aircraft (GB 5 including a trainer and one for static ground tests, Germany 3 and Italy 2) and 6 pre-production prototype aircraft (Germany 3, GB 2 and Italy 1) were build. In most cases those aircraft were not equipped completely with all systems but only selectively to undergo extensive tests with one or two systems (e.g. flightcontrol system, or terrain following radar, or navigation system and so on). Furtheron constructive changes or improvements during the ongoing developement came up and had to be incorporated and tested.

Due to reduced engine power the first prototypes were restricted to a max speed of Mach 1.3 and a maximum flight altitude of 40.000 ft. All prototypes carried extensive electronic test equipment which was capable to monitor more than 460 parameter of the airplane and record them continuously. This system was also capapble of transmitting up to 150 parameter at the same time to a ground station.

P07 had its maiden flight March 30 1976 in Manching with the crew Nils Meister and Fritz Eckert. It was the first prototype with a complete functioning avionic system. Together with prototype P04 it conducted all for the avionic system necessary trials to get an official release.
