Background Story
September 15 2007 the technical test facillity WTD 61 from Manching,
Southern Germany, celebrated its 50th birthday with a big open door day
and flight show. This facillity bears responsibility that for the
benefit of flying crews and the population only capable and safe flying
equipment is introduced into the german armed forces. Furhteron WTD 61
takes care for the qualification of newly introduced equipment into
operational flying platforms. The home of the facillity is the airfield
Ingolstadt-Manching which actually belongs to it and which is shared
with the EADS company. It has got 2 operational runways. In stock of WTD
61 are all kinds of transport and fighter aircraft as well as
helicopters which serve as testplatforms and which are equipped with
extensive special electronic equipment to conduct testflights and trial
campains.
For this special event "50 years WTD 61 - 50 years flight
test" the facillity painted two of their jets, a F-4F Phantom II and a
TORNADO IDS with a spectacular orange special paint. Additionally all
kinds of math formulas belonging to flightphysics are spread all over
the fuselage.
