Background Story Shown is TORNADO IDS 45+71 of former Naval Wing 2 (Marinefliegergeschwader 2), or MFG 2, in norm 87D camouflage painting. It carries the electronic warfare jammer "Cerberus C-III" on its outside wing station, a 1150 kg fuel tank on the inside wing station, a captive (not flyable) air-to-air missile AIM-9L(i) on its special pylon attached to the inside wing pylon and a captive KORMORAN anti-ship missile. The KORMORAN is a formerly french project from Aerospatiale which was taken over 1969 by the german MBB company which later became EADS, a multinational company. Basis was the request for a tactical off-distance fire-and-forget weapon against ships. Size, weight and aerodynamic behaviour during launch were completely adapted for the F-104 STARFIGHTER which was able to carry two of them. With introduction of the TORNADO the capacity was increased to 4 missiles.

Background story October 4 until October 20 2010 the NATO Tiger Association conducted the annual Tiger Meet. Host this year was the 313 Squadron Royal Netherland Airforce (RNLAF) at Volkel Air Base. Like normally to those events the 321 Tigers were granted to transform one of "their" ECR Tornados into a "Tigerjet". Designer of this special painting was for the second time in row the professional designer Anton Kerner. With his design and the pixel-type scheme he wanted for the first time go on to a new evolution stage, an approach towards Tiger-Tornado 2.0 - so to say - in close relation to the WWW. Intentionally this time NO Tigerjet to be touched was created which has many nice details but which can only be seen and recognized by somebody standing right in front of it. The "normal spotter" is positioned along the fence of the airfield and stares through the optics of his camera watching airplanes, parking, taxiing, taking off and landing. Exactly for this moment this design was created and exactly then the jet has to look good. Many people didn't recognize or understand this approach by Anton Kerner so a rather kontroversal discussion started in the spotter scene and the Tigerjet was given the nickname "Lego Bomber". Anton Kerner commented this as follows: "... finally I am convinced that this is not only a tigerjet with a special painting but already an art object. The form of the airplane together with the minimalistic forms message of the paint cover, construct a complete artwork which - typical for modern art - polarizes in a strong way. It really is admirable that the squadron showed such a large level of courage and open mindedness to realize this extreme design outside of each "Tigerjet norm".

Background story For the Tiger Meet in Ørland, a base in Northern Norway close to Trondheim, the 321 Tigers are allowed - finally after quite some time - to cover a Tornado with the markings of a tigerjet. The motto of the Tiger Meet is "Ice Tiger", so the designer Anton Kerner, a design professional from Ingolstadt (near Lechfeld), tries to find an approach to this motto with a color scheme in grey, blue, white and black. It is shown with air-to-air missile AIM-9Li Sidewinder, HARM air-to-ground missile and the jamming pod Cerberus C-III. In Aktion:

Background story 1994 - The first tiger airplane of the 321 tigers is given birth. It is designed for this year's Cambrai Tiger Meet in France and presented to the world in the course of a squadron party on the 29-04-1994. There are no limitations except that the wing sweep area within the fuselage has to be kept clear of any paintings or markings. Because of that it was decided to bring up a tiger marking between RADAR nose and the wing root. Additionally the insigna of the squadron crest were brought up on the tail. Together with the 46+36 and 46+40, the 46+35 participates in the Cambrai Tiger Meet where one of the other two airplanes is always a spare for any technical trouble with one of the others. When the repainting took place is not known. Ensured is, that the plane was green again on the 15-12-1994. But the painter has been sloppy and just painted in green (without a camouflage scheme) all over the front part. When the 46+35 became a grey one is not known but the fact, that it was one of the last two airplanes together with the 46+57. In Action:

Background story Just in time for the beginning of this year's NATO Tigermeet in Kleine Brogel, Belgium, 321 Tigersquadron announces the rollout of the new Tiger Tornado on this Monday, 18th June 2001. 321 Squadron proudly presents TORNADO ECR 46+44 with a new design of Lukas Krach, for the 40th anniversary of the NATO tiger association. The design idea is representing a stage of metamorphsis of any of the Lechfeld ECRs during which the the old grey skin peels off and a new tiger marking appears underneath. The erosive force of the airstream is doing its job... It is just a matter of time until the metamorphosis will start for all the other ordinary grey jets. In the meantime they are bound to wait but they all know: "there's a tiger in all of us" Realization of this idea was done with the help of Tom Marschik who did an excellent job in computerizing the original design layout, W.Heidler who assisted constantly with his airbrush experience and the designer Lukas Krach himself who spent many hours in the hangar together with numerous members of 321 Squadron during their free time to ensure to meet the timeline. For Lukas Krach this was aready the third tiger design after airplane 46+35 and the first version of airplane 46+45 in 1996. In Action:

Background story The NATO Tiger Meet 1996 at Beja/Portugal offers the 321 Tigers the chance for coloring another jet with the markings of the tiger. But this time it should be the entire airplane getting a tiger scheme. Because the wing was still engaged in the SFOR operation over the former Yugoslavia, and the airplane had to remain operational, only a black and white scheme stood to discussion and just one single airplane. One day prior departure to Beja, when the completely painted airplane stood in front of a maintenance hall, some comrades of the competing second (322 monster) squadron desecrated the airplane by painting their squadron crest on both sides of the tail. To de-escalate the situation it was negotiated that the painting could remain on one side of the fin (so to say as a greeting of the monsters to the Tiger Meet where they never could participate). It was decided to take this side of the tail which would not be visible during the landing in Beja, but - damn' - the winds were so unfortunate during the landing period that it was the wrong side. Since then an unknowing seller of plastic models sells its models with the squadron crest of the monsters on the tail of this beautiful tigerjet. In Aktion:

Background story For the 1999 Tiger Meet the Lechfeld 321 Tigers colour the ECR Tornado 46+48. As a specimen they use the blurred copy of a picture of a rare mutation (or possible gen manipulated side line) of a Sibiric Tiger. The assertion it might be the marking of a cross-breeding between african giraffe and indian tiger is by proof just the imputation of an other - not in tigermeets participating - squadron of the Lechfeld. Background story With the 46+35 in 1994 the first 321 tigerjet ever was born. Because of the fact that two more aircraft were designated for the Cambrai Tiger Meet - the 46+36 and 46+40 - it was decided and granted by higher headquarters that also these two aircraft could get a special painting (this was the first and only time that something like this happened). Both Tornados got identical tiger markings and served - more or less - as accessories to the 46+35. From there on they were called the "twins". Because one of them was always a spare aircraft for the 2 others, which had to stay on the ground, and the 46+35 was never aborted on the ground during the Tigermeet, there is no picture which shows the twins airborne together. When the repainting - most probably into the ECR grey - took place is not known.

Background story For the NATO Tiger Meet 2003 in Cambrai, France, the 321 Tigers from Lechfeld painted a new tigerjet which was ECR 46+54. This design again, like a couple before, came from the squadron designer and painter Maj. Andreas "Lukas" Krach, who also was a squadron pilot. This time it was again a design which covered the whole jet and was held mainly in a colourish dark design which underlines the tiger scheme in the middle of the jet. The two eyecatchers of the jet are the fiercely looking tiger head with its yellow-orange eyes on the tail and the starting HARM missile which fits elegantly into the tactical registration number underneath the cockpit.46+54 in front of Hohenzollern Castle

Background story Due to operational restraints and/or directives from higher headquarter, the 321 Tigers from Lechfeld were not able or allowed to cover one of its jets with a full tiger scheme. The only solution possible was to put a little tiger shaped stripe on the top of two jets. That was better than nothing and to show up with a clean jet in Turkey.

Out of the numerous proposals the squadron members select the design of Thomas "TOM" Marschik as the winning design. His special paint renders homage to the numerous former Tigerjets of the 321 Tigers. Elements of 46+35 from 1994, 46+45 from 1996 as well as of 46+44 from 2001 have been placed on it but without losing the originality as a new "Tiger". Expressivity and a clear design in the typical 321 footprint with lots of details stand in the center of this project.

Background story Since 1996 was the first squadron of GEAF FBW 32, the Lechfeld Tigers, a full member of the NATO Tiger Association, which is a loose federation of flying squadrons in NATO which carry a tiger or cat of prey in their crest. The tiger as the symbol in common is considered to stand for strength, speed and hunting prowess. Once or twice a year the members of the NATO Tiger Association come together for a so called "Tiger Meet" at one of their home bases. During those meetings they conduct daily flying exercises as well as cultural events to keep up and strengthen solidarity, comraderie, team spirit and the interchange of operating experience. The tradition of those events dictates that - if there are no other national constraints for them - each squadron sends an airplane or helicopter which has a special paint with a tiger motive or with the tiger colors. Since the begin of their membership the Lechfeld Tigers, as well as the RECCE Tigers from Recce Wing 51 in Schleswig have created a bunch of spectacular tigerjet designs. Regarding the former Lechfeld special painted ECR Tornados - also called "Tigerjets" - which are depicted below the big 2011 ECR 46+33, you will notice that some of the most striking former tigermarkings of them also show up on this new Tigerjet. For some of the observers this design may bear the attributes "boring" or "uninspired" but there is a very clear reason for this in regards to the "15 Years Full NATO Tigers Membership" anniversary. This concept which was handend in by Thomas "TOM" Marschik in the frame of a public "Tigerjet 2011 Design Competition" and elected in a democratic way by the squadron members, renders homage to the numerous former Tigerjets of the 321 Tigers in the past. Background story The name "Flying Monsters" carried the 2nd Flying Squadron of Fighterbomberwing 32 in Lechfeld since 1973. It had been the motto of a flyers ball to which the squadron had invited before. Because this name had found enormous sympathy it had just been kept. During a squadron exchange with the 356th TAC FTR SQ "Demon One" from Myrtle Beach in North Carolina/USA in 1973 which had a green demon head in its crest the idea of an own squadron crest was born. The design order was given to Major Leuthner. From a couple of different designs finally the red dragon on black background with golden border and the line "Flying Monsters" was chosen. The new crest was introduced in 1976 and officially granted by the wing kommander. In October 2011 the Flying Monsters celebrated the 35th birthday of name and crest. In Action:
